What Is an HK Prize?

A Hong Kong prize (HK prize) is an award given to individuals or companies for exceptional accomplishment. It may take the form of scholarships, grants or other types of recognition and often serves as public acknowledgement of excellence – people receiving such an honor often are considered among the leaders in their fields. Honorees may receive trophies or citations that are presented during ceremonies or by mail, while some awards are bestowed annually while others at specific times. One major event that gives out Hong Kong awards every year is the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), established in 1993 and administered by Hong Kong Film Workers Association Ltd – this HK prize voting process typically occurs January through March and open to registered voters.

The Ying Wa Girls School Documentary has been pulled from cinemas and removed from the Hong Kong Film Awards’ Best Film List following claims by one of its subjects that they did not grant consent for it to be shown publicly. However, due to lack of power to investigate further and no cancellation right, no action were taken by HKFA association to withdraw nomination. 85-year old actor Patrick Tse won Best Actor prize in Time as Hitman-turned Noodle Maker earning him standing ovations upon accepting prize at gala presentation event on Monday.

Sameen Agha from Pakistan was awarded the grand prize at this year’s Sovereign Asian Art Prize with her red marble sculpture A Home is a Terrible Place to Love. This piece depicts a house which appears to be disassembling. Michelle Fung from Hong Kong took home second prize with her mixed media work Red Bean Stalk.

In 2024, prize money for both the BMW Hong Kong Derby and four-year-old Classic series prize pools has been increased by 5.3% and 1.9%, respectively. Additionally, Group 2 and 3 contests were expanded, and an Owner Bonus Scheme introduced to provide incentive for investing in top quality horses that develop into world-class racehorses.
