Hong Kong is one of the world’s major financial centers and widely respected for its high-quality education, cutting-edge research and innovation, outstanding business talent, and exceptional quality of life. No wonder then that this city has earned numerous accolades; most prestigious being The Hong Kong Prize which honors achievements across different fields including science & technology, innovation & enterprise as well as public service.
The Hong Kong Prize honors individuals or teams who demonstrate exceptional pioneering efforts and have successfully applied and transformed scientific research achievements for societal benefit. It aims to inspire scientific researchers and innovators in Hong Kong to continue exploring innovation while creating a globally competitive research and development hub in this region. This award is sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited.
Out of all of the Hong Kong Prizes awards, Nick Cheuk was recognized with best new director for his drama Time Still Turns the Pages about family trauma and student suicide, while actress Tse Leung won best actress for her portrayal of an immigrant whose hopes for happiness clash with living with an abusive drug-addicted father in Beijing.
Alongside the main awards, students may enter several other categories where they can receive certificates of merit or book coupons worth HK$1,000. This year’s newspaper society received 617 entries from 20 Hong Kong secondary schools; Edmond Tang from China Daily captured some of their happiness at winning awards.
One of the most coveted awards at this year’s Hong Kong Film Award for Feature Film ceremony was determined by local film workers and critics, voting on Ten Years as their winner – an intense film which explores residents’ anxieties regarding Hong Kong as it comes under greater pressure from Beijing.
Hong Kong Academy of Medicine’s Young Fellow Research Prize is another highly coveted prize that recognizes excellence in research conducted by young Academy Fellows. Submissions may come from any area of clinical practice or medical sciences research.
