Toto, Singapore’s official lottery game since 1968, has long been played by generations of Singaporeans and plays an essential part of economic development. Jeremy Tiang was awarded the best English translation prize for his translation of Zhang Yueran’s Cocoon (2022). This novel depicts two childhood friends reunited as late teens discussing dark secrets buried from their families during the Cultural Revolution. Jeremy is an award-winning poet and writer living between Shanghai and Singapore; his works have been published by Epigram Books, Seagull Books, the National Library Board in Singapore Giramondo Books Alban Lake as well as poetry anthologies by W.W. Norton & Everyman’s Library among others.
An annual award, this prize aims to foster an active and creative arts scene in Singapore by encouraging students of all ages to enter. Selected works by a panel of judges will receive prizes worth SGD$10,000 plus cash awards totalling SGD$3,000 as well as scholarships for courses offered through NUS School of Continuing Education; additionally, their works will be showcased at an exhibition held by National Museum of Singapore.
The NUS Singapore History Prize was launched in 2014 thanks to a generous endowment from an anonymous donor, honouring works that make Singapore’s rich and varied past more accessible for general audiences, while offering fresh insight into our nation’s past.
This year’s prize featured 91 entries from around the globe and included an entirely new category to recognize art created by intellectually disabled persons, per the panel’s request to recognize artwork created by persons from marginalised groups.
This year’s Prize Ceremony took place at Singapore’s MediaCorp Theatre on June 1, hosted by actor Hannah Waddingham and Sterling K. Brown and featuring performances by One Republic, Bastille, Bebe Rexha and Yeni Yusuf (Singaporean singer-songwriter). Earthshot Asia 2017 marked the inaugural Earthshot conference held in Southeast Asia, making Singapore an epicenter of climate action innovation and impact. Held in partnership with Temasek Trust, GenZero and Conservation International. William was dressed according to the sustainability theme by wearing an Alexander McQueen dark green blazer from 10 years ago, while other presenters walked down a “green carpet.” Temasek Trust trustees and high profile guests such as former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern were present for the gala dinner that announced 2023 winners. They were joined by representatives from five shortlisted organisations – Accion Andina, GRST, WildAid Marine Program, S4S Technologies and Boomitra. This event was supported by both the UNESCO-IUCN World Heritage Centre and National Museum of Singapore.
